Dear Asbury Families,
Two things are top of mind this week! One is all about celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and the other is about the consolidation process that DPS has announced. Please read below for more information about both things.
Hispanic Heritage Month: This week kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month! From Sept. 15-Oct. 15 we celebrate the many generations of Hispanic Americans who have enriched our nation and continue to live their heritage to this day. Here at DPS, 51.8% of our students and 37.5% of all our employees are Hispanic, making them the largest population of color that the district serves and employs!
You might hear the terms Hispanic and Latino used interchangeably. Hispanic describes someone from a Spanish-speaking country. Latino, Latina, Latine and Latinx refer to people of Latin American origin. Because our schools are filled with various cultures, Hispanic Heritage Month in DPS celebrates students and staff with roots in countries where Spanish is the primary language.
Wishing everyone a happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
DPS Consolidation Process: This November, the Denver Public Schools (DPS) Board of Education will consider the recommendation of consolidating or closing some of our schools. As part of the school consolidation process, they will be engaging with the community to answer questions and address concerns.
During the community engagement phase of the school consolidation process, DPS is hosting six regional community meetings from late September to mid-October. Interpreters for our eight most spoken languages (Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Amharic, Dari, French, Nepali and Somali) will be present at each meeting. Dinner and childcare will also be provided.
Below are the dates and locations of the six regional meetings. If you are planning to attend one of these meetings, please complete this form.
In Partnership,

FMLA and FAMLI+ Leaves and Their Impact at Asbury
We have had several grade levels impacted by teacher leaves. We all are thrilled with teachers taking leaves and spending time with their newest additions, but we have noted a few impacts to our classrooms and have also felt the impact of these different leaves. To raise these concerns to DPS, we came together to create this letter to send along to the Instructional and Operational Directors of our school to raise our perspectives and seek change. We will keep you informed on next steps. Please take time to read the linked letter to get more insight into this feedback and challenge.
DPS/Asbury Release Days (Teacher Work Days)
