This month, we are focusing on an essential aspect of our students’ safety: cybersecurity and digital kindness. In our increasingly digital world, it is crucial to ensure that our children can learn, play, and socialize online safely.
Why It Matters
The internet offers countless opportunities, but it also presents some risks. Students can communicate through various platforms, including games, apps, texts, and even Google Docs. To help protect our students, DPS utilizes Lightspeed and AI tools to:
Flag inappropriate behavior.
Filter unsafe content.
Alert us to online safety concerns.
For more information on how DPS uses AI to keep students safe, you can check out this report from CBS News. At Asbury, students in 4th and 5th grade have been using an AI platform called Magic School that is really cool and can be moderated by the teachers. Click HERE for more information on Magic School.
Platforms to Watch and Tips for Families
Online Games (Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft)
Risk: Unfiltered voice/text chat with strangers.
Tip: Use parental controls and set screen time limits.
Resources: Xbox | Nintendo | PlayStation
Discord
Risk: Private DMs and unmoderated chats.
Tip: Stick to friends-only servers and utilize blocking/reporting tools.
Tip: Have regular conversations about online interactions, set expectations, and teach safe habits.
Simple Ways to Stay Involved
Set parental controls on devices and apps.
Regularly review privacy settings.
Make digital safety a weekly conversation.
Ask your student to show you the platforms they are using.
Together, we can create a safer, smarter, and kinder online world for our students. If you have any questions or need support, please do not hesitate to contact us!
In Partnership,
Jeanna Doung

End of Year BESS Surveys are Open
What is the DPS social emotional screener? Please view this FAQ document to learn more about the BESS and universal screening in DPS this year.
Be sure to fill out the end of year BESS Survey as a parent/guardian as soon as possible. The data really helps us support your students here at Asbury.
CMAS testing will continue on Monday, April 14 for 4th grade only and then Tues 4/15, Wed 4/16, Thurs 4/17 for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Our attendance has been great! Thanks for continuing to get your students to school on time during this testing window!
In order for students to be able to be ready and do their BEST, please help with the following:
help them get a good night’s sleep each night
make sure they eat a good breakfast at home or at school each morning
have them arrive at school ON TIME
be sure they have working WIRED headphones (bluetooth are not allowed) – if they need to purchase a new pair, they can bring $5 into Ms. Baca and she will sell them a pair
We are also continuing to ask for donations of snacks for our students who may need them during the two weeks of testing – ie. granola bars, small individual bags of pretzels, goldfish, crackers, chips, anything individually wrapped (not cookies or candy!) and not sticky/messy! If you wish to donate, please bring them to Ms. Baca in the office.
