Message from the Principal September, 2009
A warm welcome to our new and returning families! I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. I have an open door policy and encourage you to share your ideas, concerns or positive suggestions with me via e-mail (anita_theriot@dpsk12.org), by telephone or in person. An Asbury Thursday folder will be provided by the school and sent home on a weekly basis containing any correspondence from school. Please keep a look out for these folders and return them with your child on Friday.
Be sure to refer to the Asbury Elementary Parent Compact, Student Conduct & Discipline Code and Student Dress Code Policy. Read these important documents together with your child and have a discussion. If you have any questions, please call the office for clarification. I appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a productive and orderly environment. The safety of our children is of the utmost importance to us all!
Writing Alive is a new writing program we will all utilize this year. It follows the Denver Public Schools core curriculum, but adds grade level specifics on how to teach and evaluate the various genres taught. Positive Behavior Supports has come to Asbury as well. Ask your child if they are doing their BEST. We have more information on this during the PBS Parent Night, on September 10th from 6:00-7:30. Bond funds have allowed us to purchase a number of new items to ensure that we are teaching the students the 21st century skills they need. The teachers, staff and I have been actively involved in learning about these and other new educational techniques throughout the year. We are also excited about receiving a VH-1 Grant, which gave us 25 K worth of musical instruments, to be used with our fourth and fifth graders. The Beacon Lights are up and running. And have you seen the garden? Life is good at Asbury.
To encourage parents to read the newsletter, I am offering a small incentive. The first parent that comes up to me and says…”I read the September Asbury Newsletter and learned _________”, will receive a small gift.
The partnership between school and the Asbury community is extremely important in helping achieve all our goals and continuing all the stimulating and innovative things we do. We invite you to volunteer, support our fundraisers, join the PTA, serve on a committee, come to visit and maintain an interest in your child’s work at school. When we work together, remarkable things can happen.
