Favorite Sound?

The sound of music in which the performer is truly expressing themselves and communicating through their art. It’s like you’re hearing a part of their soul.

Biggest risk you’ve taken?

Going back to school at the age of 33 to become a music teacher. It was the best decision ever!

Pets?

Four cats, which probably qualifies me for crazy cat lady status. Their names are Rocky, Argie, Buddha and Chicken.

Hometown?

Monrovia, Indiana

Dream vacation?

A world tour in which I could become immersed in all the different cultures and communities that I visited.

Favorite thing about living in Colorado?

Sunshine and mountains

Best part of teaching?

My students! It is the most gratifying thing to see young people learn and grow their minds.

Favorite book or author?

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, the entire Harry Potter series and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Hidden talent?

The ability to organize anything from rooms to systems to time. Although my husband refers to it as a neurosis…

Chocolate

Favorite Food?

Mexican food and almost ANYTHING spicy.
(and a yummy salad)

Favorite Sound?

I love the sound of the ocean and the waves crashing. Whenever we go on vacation to the beach I make sure i can hear the ocean from where ever I am sleeping!

Favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I watch my kids play sports! I go to, football, lacrosse, basketball, and tons of soccer games. My favorite game to watch was when my girls were on the winning state soccer team. I cried tears of joy for them; especially when they gave each other a big huge hug on the field after the game.
I also like to cook when I have time.

Pets?

I don’t have any pets at the time, but I love cats and cat-sit for my mom when she goes on vacation.

Best day(s) of your life?

The best days of my life where when each of my children were born!
Eachone of them are the light of my life.

How many years teaching?

I have been teaching for 23 years. All of those years have been at Asbury! I just love it here.

Alma Mater?

I went to Arizona Stat University and got my teaching license from Metro.

Hometown?

I was born and raised in Colorado. I love it here.

What’s on your ipod?

Mostly things my kids have downloaded.
And books off of Amazon.

Dream vacation?

Some place warm with a beach with my family and friends.

Favorite thing about living in Colorado?

The weather and my family is all here. (except for my daughter that is going to college in San Diego)

Favorite sport to watch or play and why?

I like to watch football and hockey with my husband and son.
I used to play soccer but I am afraid of getting hurt now.
I like to ski too.

Favorite board game?

Our favorite family games are UNO and Mexican Train.

Best part of teaching?

Kids, kids and kids!!!!!
I like when grown up kids come back that I taught in first grade so we can catch up on how their life is going.

Picture books

Favorite memory teaching?

I have so many I can’t pick a favorite.

Favorite comment from a student?

I love it when kiddos say to me, “Mrs. Chapman……….I just love to read!!!”

Favorite flavor of ice cream?

The ocean

Biggest risk you’ve taken?

Deciding to move to Colorado with my husband and two cats.

Favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I love spending  time with my family, hiking, skiing, snowboarding and playing soccer.

Pets?

We have two cats.  Shasta has grey and black tiger stripes and Yonder is all black.  We also have a 114 pound Swiss Mountain dog named Lily.

Best day(s) of your life?

May 21, 2005 – the day my son Dylan was born and October 28, 2007

What’s on your ipod?

I love music and listen to it all the time.  On my ipod I have lots of jam band music.  Phish, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Lumineers, Michael Franti, Dispatch, String Cheese Incident, Fleetwood Mac, and tons more!

Dream vacation?

I’d love to take my boys back to Hawaii where my husband and I went for our honeymoon so we could al try surfing.

Favorite thing about living in Colorado?

Lack of humidity, small number of mosquitos, amazing mountains to snowboard on, and 300 days of  sunshine!

Favorite sport to watch or play and why?

Soccer.  I love to watch any game!  I have played my whole life and still play on a team and with my boys.          

Favorite comment from a student?

After reading a bunch of different types of poems, a student came up to me and said, “Mrs. Ravel, this Anonymous is a really good poet!”

Christopher Moore, Jack Kerouac and JK Rowling

Why teaching?

I get a chance to inspire and encourage kids each and every day.  Not one day is the same as any other day.  Seeing a student work hard and finally “get it” is amazing!

1990 (I took 8 years off from 2005-2013 to be a stay at home mom for my boys, Dylan and Brody)

Hidden talent?

I played both tennis and soccer in college.  After college I coached high school soccer and tennis.

Jennifer Werner – Art
I am a native of Colorado and grew up attending DPS schools, which included, Park Hill, Smiley Middle School, and East High School.   I hold a psychology degree and an elementary teaching license from CU Boulder.  I also have a minor of fine arts and a second teaching licensure in the visual arts from Metro. I have been teaching in DPS for 13 years, 8 of those years being at Asbury.   Recently I became a certified yoga instructor.  I am also a professional artist and have been selling my work in Colorado for the past 14 years.  My work is currently shown in several local galleries, including “Willow” in Littleton and 901 Arts on Santa Fe. I am  a mixed media artist focusing on mosaics, collage, and fused glass.   When I am not in the studio you will find me in the garden, playing scrabble, roller-blading, mountain biking, rafting, yoga, or curled up with a good book.
